Compass Plaza
Bellevue, WA

Landscape architecture for a pedestrian corridor and major public open space in Bellevue's central business district.

Hewitt revised and updated twenty-year old design guidelines for three super-blocks along the pedestrian corridor in downtown Bellevue. The guidelines include the development of design concepts reflecting the distinct conditions and character of each individual block. Elements of continuity in the form of street furniture items were determined. Ideas and examples for public art in the form of wayfinding components were conceptualized.

The 15,000 square foot plaza along Bellevue's 6th Street pedestrian corridor is adjacent to Bellevue Galleria and sits midway between Bellevue Square and the downtown transit center. Compass Plaza serves as the primary urban open space in the central business district.

Hewitt designed the space to be functional for everyday activities as well as special events. Other unique elements of Compass Plaza include:

* A water feature designed in collaboration with local artist Nancy Hammer
* A privately operated food and beverage pavilion
* ADA access for the sloping site
* Preservation of a historic oak tree
* Integration with Bellevue Galleria's street-level retail and restaurants
